Photography Best Practices
Most of the magic is done in post processing editing, but there are a few things you can default to when photographing that will prepare your images to excel beyond expectation.
Camera Settings
- Set Focus to Auto - this will allow the camera to focus on the entirety of the room, eliminating any areas of blur or pixelation due to unnatural focal length.
- Set ISO below 800, or if possible just use AUTO ISO. When shooting in a well lit environment, the system will likely adjust to a lower ISO, but make sure to not set this value too high or you will see grain in your images.
- There is much debate about the zoom in real estate photography, we have found that if you open up the wide angle zoom to about 0.3x you will have the best view of the space without causing distortions or irregularities in the photograph.
Capture Positioning
- Photograph from the corners of a room, in conjunction with an appropriate focal length, you will be able to capture about 85% of the room in a single shot.
- Keep your device level, if you do not have a physical or digital level installed, use the natural lines of the floor and walls to ensure you are photographing a level scene.
- Photograph from just above waist height. Though this may seem unnatural at first, it will allow the photograph to contain both floor and ceiling.
- Be sure to not photograph with any objects in the room too close to the camera, within 3 feet, as this will cause unnatural distortion in some views.
