Preparing Your Environment

You will want to create a perfect environment to photograph your home, this will ensure that the images you capture will be of the highest quality.

Lighting

  • Natural light is the best source of lighting for interiors. Open the windows and curtains and let the sun in, allowing as much natural light to fill the room as possible.
  • Sometimes outside light is not enough, due to sun position or weather. Other times it may be too direct, over exposing your photos. In this case, it is advised to turn on light fixtures in your home.
  • Avoid LED lights or high intensity lights as they will not pair well with the camera and surrounding environment in the photograph.

Tip: All home environments are different, experiment with the different ways to produce a light filled room and you will be photographing high quality images in no time. When in doubt, turn on lights!

Time of Day

  • The best time to photograph is right aournd midday, but some properties get the most light in the morning or afternoon. Be sure to have enough time to shoot with constant light. Avoid shooting interiors at sunset, when the light quickly changes color.

Content

  • Clean your environment. The goal is to look move-in ready, not lived-in.
  • Remove pets, turn off fans and televisions.
  • Remove any personal items, photos, or things you just don’t want the public to see.
  • When photographing a space, you want to show what potential buyers would most likely be interested in seeing, sometimes taking more than one photo per room is necessary to accomplish this. Example; appliances, large open spaces, bathroom detail, decks and pools, large closets, etc.
